Roy Poper Workshop & Masterclass, April 5, 2009

Students of Rich Pokrywka from Skyline Music and BW got a chance to hear Oberlin Conservatory trumpet professor Roy Poper's advice on the technical basics of a good trumpet sound on April 5. The Sunday afternoon workshop offered tips on everything from mouthpiece placement to the mental approach to orchestral soloing. Mr. Poper graciously shared his insights with more than 20 students, working them through exercises and coaching several individuals on specific passages.

Recital Information

Mixed with the technical advice were many anecdotes from his long career as a teacher, soloist, orchestra member and studio musician.
The workshop was free to the students. Skyline faculty member Rich Pokrywka, a former student of Poper's, jumped at the opportunity to present the workshop when Mr. Poper generously offered to spend time with students in Rich's studio.

We're always pleased to offer these additional benefits to our students whenever the opportunity arises, because many students never get the opportunity to work with a teacher and player of Roy Poper's talent and experience. It was particularly gratifying to see some of our youngest students participate, and we also congratulate their parents for making ithe time to attend .

During the two-hour event, Mr. Poper discussed the techniques of legendary Los Angeles teacher James Stamp, with whom he studied in the early years of his career. Much of the Stamp approach centers on mouthpiece buzzing to train the muscles and ear to improve accuracy, consistency, and tone. As Mr. Poper led the students through group exercises, ihe was able to coax improvements from them in just a few minutes.

Right: Roy Poper demonstrates the physical approach to the trumpet mouthpiece, first with a simple straw to illustrate the feeling of airflow, then with the mouthpiece alone to focus sound and pitch.
