Back to the FunHouse Entrance

Anyone that has talked to me much is probably aware that I have a wide variety of interests,
from the sublime to the ridiculous. OK, heavy on the silly, I'll admit. But this page just has
links to stuff I found either interesting or so surreal that I had to share it. You won't find
links to the really common pop culture sites that all the high school kids share, not because
some of it isn't howlingly funny, but because you can find it so many other places.
No, I don't link to the nasty stuff either. Not my style, y'all. But if you're interested in graphic
arts and design, cartooning, industrial design, unusual music, and other oddities, click a
few of these links.

One of the greats of 20th Century industrial design, (another is Cleveland's own Viktor Schreckengost, who unfortunately
has no website devoted to him) Loewy is the man behind the Shell logo, the Coke bottle, the Avanti, and so much more!

You've seen his work everywhere, because he's the father of the modern movie poster. His illustrations have been commissioned by major companies from apparel to aerospace, and by many magazines, including TIME.

Another widely published illustrator, from cartoons to editorial work to children's books. His site is also part of a huge
ring of cartoonist links. Check out the Bob Shop!

You've probably seen his work--very '60's hipster-meets-Pink-Panther-at-the-Tiki-Lounge. SHAG is the art name of
Josh Agle. His stuff is fun, retro-cool, and getting a lot of attention.

You've heard his music. Yeah you have, if you've ever watched more than a couple of old Warner Brothers cartoons. Part klezmer, part jazz, part electronica, all quirky--and fun in smaller doses. It just makes me smile--then shake my head.

My favorite fonts. These guys produce the coolest, most art intensive, vibed-out, and overpackaged fonts around. We use
them all over our publications. If I did graphic design instead of music, my dream would be to work there.

The gang at Tiki Farm are the prime purveyors of Polynesian pop culture and party goods! Check out their vast array of
kitsch-laden, high art, subculture Tiki mugs! There is absolutely NO way you can have an effective luau without a few of these at the bar! Look for some of these splendido vibe-vessels at our Hawaiian Shirt Day Celebrations!

Oddities

You were just wondering about this, weren't you? Bless the man for compiling some of the greatest whistling ever recorded.
Why? Because it's the Web, that's why. For some people, it's the electronic equivalent of collecting tinfoil, I guess.

The New Zealand songbird herself! Long before William Hung, Wing was in the trenches warbling up a storm. I was hip to her LONG before the clowns of South Park brought her to even greater prominence. Her Carpenters album is a
standout: utter monstrosity or fitting tribute? You be the judge!

Flea Market Music

Jim Beloff's sprawling site for the ukulele community. Yes, there is one--his site registers close to half a million hits! About as niche-y as it gets, but a treasure trove of intormation and support for the uke-addicted. George Harrison was a ukie, after all! Whether you're into Hawaiiana, old time, jazz, or just weirded out by the scene, this is the home of uke-core.

Angry Alien Productions

Jennifer Shiman's clever yet twisted Flash animations outshine so much on the web because she's slyly intelligent rather than just yukking it up to gross out everyone.  Yes, she's the one with "The Exorcist in 30 Seconds (and re-enacted by bunnies)". Long live 30-second Bunny Theatre!
